Water Current Energy Demonstration Exhibit
This exhibit demonstrates how underwater currents can be harnessed to generate energy from the flow. Visitors can generate water currents and observe how it is converted!

Background

Water current Energy (water flow) is available abundantly in nature and can be harnessed if engineered properly. This exhibit provides a means to create such water flow inside a small transparent glass cylinder, which then rotates a turbine, which can be converted into useful electricity!

Glass tube containing 98 percent water to simulate water current.

A half steering mechanism is provided to tilt the
mechanism in any direction. Tilting produces water current.

Picture shows strong water current formed on sudden tilt.

This project was developed for an NGO which is into building Scientific Exhibitions, Museums and upgrade Science Demonstration infrastructure in schools called Deenabandhu. As part of an Energy themed Science Museum they were setting up this exhibit was developed by Ideas Unlimited, Mysuru.

Deenabandhu is a charitable Non-Profit Organization located in Chamarajnagar. Deenabandhu works towards the education and rehabilitation of orphan, destitute and estranged children. The trust is also into Science, innovation and teaching Science to school children and other activities.

The System consists of a Glass tube mounted on a pivot at center. A half Steering allows the visitor to tilt the glass tube filled with water either towards the left or right. Water is filled to near complete levels in the glass tube and tilting causes water to flow from left to right or viceversa based on the direction of tilt. This produces an underwater current in one of the direction.

A turbine mounted at the center of this tube harvests the energy from water flow (Water Current energy) which is demonstrated by this exhibit.
